Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival
Friday, 17 to Sunday 19 July plus breakfasts on Monday, 20 July
Let’s make Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival 2026 a bumper year. Can you help?
Last year, through shared efforts, just over £4,500 was made for St John’s Church and Tolpuddle Village Hall – supporting both bodies and the important roles they play in village life. This year we’re hoping to do even better. As well as daily breakfasts at the Martyrs Field (led by Jonathan Van Baars and Andy Turner), Sunday refreshments at the village hall, Mandy Sylvester is also organising catering for some of the speakers, support staff and a Festival event during the weekend. Proceeds from all of these, plus carparking on the Sunday, will underpin the work of the Church and the Village Hall, ever more necessary at this time of ever rising costs.
Of course, none of this is possible without the wonderful support and contributions from the village and beyond. As ever, we need your help again this year, particularly with the refreshments in the village hall. The Sunday team of Fiona Cope, Liz Gulliver, Julie Bonner (making a welcome return to Tolpuddle) and Margaret Walton have agreed to do ‘just one more year’ and will be joined by Anna Gibson, making her Festival debut! With your help, we hope to go out with a bang. We will continue with the popular ‘ploughman’s in a box’ lunches and the usual amazing array of homemade cakes, together with teas, coffees and soft drinks provided throughout the day, reinforcing our highly-valued reputation for providing good value, home-cooked food, locally-sourced and produced, where possible. Last year, such was the demand, we ran out of everything by 4.30pm! This year we’d like to be open a little longer to catch the home-going crowd but that means we’ll need more food to sell.
To make this a success we need help in providing the food; setting up the hall on Saturday afternoon; and serving and clearing up in the hall on the day. We need:
Homemade cakes of all shapes, sizes and flavours*
Homemade quiches of all types*
Help with setting up tables and chairs from 5.00pm on Saturday 18th
Helpers in the hall from 8.30am – 5.30pm on Sunday 19th. We plan to open from 10.00am to approx. 5.00pm (hopefully the food will not run out again!) and are looking for volunteers to do 2-hour periods at a time in the hall but there is flexibility. We will prepare a rota for the day in due course.
*we can help with the cost of the ingredients, if needed.
None of this is possible without our band of volunteers. If you would be willing to help with any – or all – of the items listed above, please email or text/WhatsApp Margaret Walton (maclark2@btinternet.com or 07740622415) or Anna Gibson (tolpuddlevolunteers@gmail.com or 07498986189) and let them know what you would be prepared to do and, if able to help on the day, whether you have any time constraints. Many of you will have volunteered before and we very much hope you will do so again. If you are new to the area, it is a great way to meet people and help the village at the same time. It may be hard work, but it’s also FUN!
Breakfasts on the Martyrs Field
Jonathan and Andy are also looking for volunteers to help with the breakfasts at the Martyrs Field on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings, 7:00 to 10:00. Please contact them:
Jonathan: jonathan@vanbaars.co.uk
Andy: apturner55@gmail.com if you are not already signed up and would like to help.
Thanks in advance from us all.

Tolpuddle Old Chapel presents the fifth of The Sunday Sessions 2026
Talk: Kate Adie, ex-BBC Correspondent
Sunday, 17 May, 2026 at the Old Chapel 3pm
The idea behind these Sunday Sessions is to offer alternative music and drama in a small and atmospheric location for which the Old Chapel is ideal. Because of its size, tickets will be limited to 30 seats and it is advisable to purchase them prior to the event.
Our final session in this series of The Sunday Sessions will be on 17 May when we will welcome Kate Adie ex BBC correspondent.
Please note we expect there will be a demand for the Kate Adie talk so preference will be given to people who have supported the past Sunday Sessions.
Enquiries to: Ian Cray: 07941645303 or email: iancray@icloud.com
All profits from these events will go to help maintain the Old Chapel.
